As the country faces various political crises related to health care, the importance of having collective knowledge and solutions to the problem remains the topmost priority for the political party. For the New Democratic Party, this translates to taking part in actions that will contribute to Canada's health care system development.
The primary reason why health care is a topic of importance is because people spend so much on it. Patients are responsible for a larger part of their own costs through cost sharing and co insurance. Many states are working towards creating transparency regarding prices. Medicare has continued to operate on various websites to allow customers to view rankings and quality reviews. The Affordable Care Act include elements that pertain price transparency and hospital requirements to update lists of standard charges (American College of Physicians, 2017).
There have been various challenges regarding helath care price transparency.the cost of helath care are not consistent for each and every patient across the country. Reports indicate that it may be difficult to estimate health care prices due to difficulty in prediction and a variety of insurance benefit structures. The Government Accountability Office report that sharing information of health care costs is prohibited by the antitrust laws of various health care providers. Furthermore, many consumers lack the health care literacy to understand the information provided to them.
Surprise billing is another major challenge among health care consumers. This results for consumers receiving services from out of network health care providers. Unexpected billing may results from patients receiving out of network services that they are unaware of at the time. Surprise billing may also occur as a result of transport during emergencies after a condition like a heart attack. Surveys indicate that the rate of surprise billing is high. for the patients who are insured, surprise billing mat arise from the differences in cost sharing between The in network and out of network health care providers (American College of Physicians, 2016).
