Bian Alkan was born on December 1995 in Southeast Asia, modern day Vietnam. Bian’s parents relocated to Brooklyn, New York, when she was nine years old, where she grew up. Bian attended the University of Pennsylvania, where she graduated with a bachelor's degree. She later learned she had an interest in music and decided to follow her music passion. Since Bian’s childhood, she has experienced racism and has often been affected even as a white American. The following paper aims to discuss how racism affected Bian’s personal life, basing the argument on education, employment, housing, and health while describing the connection between race and socioeconomic class.
Bian’s parents settled in Brooklyn, New York, a neighborhood inhabited mainly by whites, African Americans and American Indians. Most of the children Bian interacted with were black Americans. For that reason, Bian experienced discrimination acts at a young age when she realized that other black children perceived her as different because of her white color. While playing, other children often segregated and ignored, resulting in her childhood low self-esteem, anxiety, and lack of confidence. After the discrimination acts, she spent most of her time indoors playing videos game or sleeping.
