Introduction
Justice is simply giving everyone his due. It is related to the concept of equality as well as everyone’s getting the share he or she deserves. According to Abercrombie et al., the Russian social and cultural model has governed always been governed through the idea of justice to all. The communist Russia that existed before must have carried with it the some cultural and social aspects into today’s capitalist Russia. We there need to determine whether justice is one of these cultural and social behaviors that were carried over into the current day Russia. This will be achieved by finding out what Russians themselves consider to be just. According to (Dzheri, 2001), what is considered to be just in one society may not be just to another society. Therefore, studying what Russians consider just would be very significant for our topic.
In order to get the better picture of the study, some important questions must be answered. First, is justice still a vital incorporation aspect in today’s social and cultural setting of Russians? According to a survey carried out in 2012, 45% of citizens in this country believe that their country observes and operates under the slogans of equal rights to all, and social justice. 27 % of the population endorsed the slogan of democracy and freedom of personal expression as well as establishing a great power and creating stability in society. To a great extent, the idea of justice plays a significant role in consolidating Russian society.
According to Mareeva (2010), a just society trusts its government in enabling and guaranteeing justice. There is therefore a strong relationship between regime and justice which presents itself in the Russian consciousness.
Russian people and government also believe that justice is an inevitable factor when it comes to their country’s modernization. In 2010, justice was ranked third among factors that would enable Russia achieve modernization.
The final role of justice in most Russians is visible in the fact that it is ranked among the top three wishes ‘for oneself’. 33% of Russians wish to live in a just society just as they would wish to have a good health. This is very important because almost every individual would wish to have a good health and yet the same number of people vote for a just society as they do for a good health.
On the other hand, there are other negative opinions that some Russians consider unfavorable to them as far as justice is concerned. The Public Opinion Foundation conducted in 2007 show that 68% of Russians feels that their society is not fairly organized while that conducted in 2011 reveal that 61% of Russians think the same. 47% suggested that western countries are fairly organized than their country.
These inequalities that exist in Russian society are not taken easily by Russian citizens. However, they weigh between legitimate and illegitimate inequalities. For instance, they consider better housing conditions, medical services, quality education, and high pensions are considered illegitimate inequalities. On the other hand, inequalities that exist under conditions of equal opportunities, hard work, and personal dedication do not raise concern among the Russians. In a survey conducted in 2012, Russians tolerance on for distribution of personal property rose to 12% from 6% in 2007.
