Definition and Main Tenets as Applied in Cybercrime
A psychological theory, social learning theory, explains how people pick up new behaviors through imitation and observation (Akers & Jennings, 2019). According to this hypothesis, people pick up behavior from their environment by watching and then copying the behavior of others. Since Albert Bandura first presented this idea in 1977, criminology has extensively used it. Social learning theory posits that individuals learn through observation and that reinforcement is a critical factor in learning (Illeris, 2018). It also argues in favor of modeling alongside peer association.
According to the social learning theory, as it relates to cybercrimes, people are likely to copy the actions of their peers in these situations (Dearden & Parti, 2021). If people are exposed to peers who are already involved in cybercrimes, they may be more prone to engage in them themselves. Peer pressure, a need to fit in, or a need for recognition are a few reasons for this. According to the social learning theory, people tend to emulate the behaviors of those around them. Hence it is crucial to be aware of these tendencies regarding cybercrimes.
