Culture and Social Transmission within a Society
A society's culture consists of its members' mutually held values, beliefs, norms, symbols, language, artifacts, religion, customs, traditions, social structure, creative expression, and political and economic systems (Tamariz). The term "society" describes a large organized group of people whom all live in the same place and have a common culture (Levin and Dan). Culture is essential to the existence of any community. Only individuals and their many communities may create a society. Humans are not culture, but they are cultural bearers and cultural transmitters. To add to this, culture has no meaning unless a group of people shares it, and no group can flourish without shared cultural norms and values.
Two primary elements make culture: the immaterial and the material. Ethics, concepts, emblems, and language contribute to a society's nonmaterial culture (Mandal). All the tangible things that make up a civilization are considered part of its material culture. This includes everything from tools and technology to furniture, food, clothes, and transportation (Mandal). Subcultures can exist inside larger cultural groups. Here we see an example of how a subculture's social concerns might differ significantly from those of the dominant society.
People have varying degrees of allegiance to the more significant cultural norms. This is because there is a wide range of people's levels of understanding, interpretation, and adoption of societal themes. People and their cultures have a symbiotic, mutually beneficial interaction (Levin and Dan). One view is that individuals reflect the values and norms of their
