Social problems are the additional conditions that affect the real life of the members of an individual society. Social changes are believed to be one of the fundamental causes of social problems in various communities. For instance, population growth brings forth issues like poverty, antisocial behavior as a result of unemployment. Also, changes in the social values affect the old norms and values of the society either positively or negatively. Problems like child labor, early pregnancies and rape are determined by the social values. Most people in the world encounter many issues in today’s society which deprive them the ability to be productive and efficient members. Low level of education, social inequality, high population, lack of peace, disintegration and unemployment lead to other problems like antisocial behavior, disorganization, illiteracy, drug abuse and poverty.
Social inequality occurs when members of a particular society get unequal treatment from the others based on their gender, race or disability. For example, racial discrimination between the Americans and the black Americans in the United states where their rights are different. Social disorganization or lack of an orderly system in the society results in an imbalance in that particular society. Conflict occurs due to disintegration and lack of control among members. Lack of peace in the community reduces harmony and creates room for war between individuals and communities (Woolgar & Pawluch, 1985
Rapid growth in population, especially in rural areas, causes poverty. High population means increased mouths to feed, but with high demand for employments, the level of unemployment rises. Hence, people strive to meet the basic needs at all chances due to lack of secure jobs. Besides poverty and high unemployment levels, (Kitsuse & Spector 1973) most of the society members go for alternative ways to meet their basic needs. Some engage in antisocial behavior such as begging, pickpocketing and other social crimes like stealing. Others try to find the console in drugs which increases the rates of substance abuse and alcoholism, and this may, in turn, reduce the effective power in the society.
Social problems result from different causes in various communities and under different circumstances. Sociologists, so far have failed to suggest a primary reason for social problems but have pinpointed various grounds for some problems. For instance, feeble-mindedness or ignorance, physical disabilities, religion nature are some of the stated reasons (Gusfield 1989). For example, drug abuse, poverty, and antisocial behavior are caused by unemployment. Also, the changes in social values determine whether an issue is still a problem to the whole community or not (Conrad 1997). For example, lack of the traditional strictness on the dressing code for women has led to the freedom of dressing which is one of the causes of rape cases and early pregnancies. Social problems disturb the harmony and bring about misery and dissatisfaction in the society.
