In a group discussion on Friday, 22nd November, we had a disagreement, and I needed clarification about how I would handle the situation. One of my colleagues, an American, was quite aggressive and did not fear expressing his ideas. However, another colleague of Asian origin kept quiet during the disagreement and did not say a word. Fortunately, the heated argument did not lead to violence. After this incident, I wanted to know why my colleague from Asia did not want to engage in the disagreement. He explained that in his culture, silence is valued more than words. I also wanted to understand why my American colleague was aggressive. He explained that the American culture encourages people to be expressive and speaking in a group is considered confident. This can be explained using the concept of a tight culture where strong norms affect people's behavior in a group.
On 1st December my friend called me crying that she had broken up with her boyfriend. I had to travel to her place so I could comfort her. She explained she had seen love emoticons that the boyfriend had sent to another girl. She felt offended and believed that the boyfriend was cheating. She did not want to listen to him as she already suspected he was not faithful. I called the boyfriend, and when he came, I saw him talking to his sister. I could detect that the boyfriend was telling the truth as his spoken words were incongruent with the non-verbal cues. However, I explained to my friend the importance of understanding non-verbal communication, as one can make inappropriate conclusions. The incidence can be explained by the concept of non-verbal cues, which proves it is difficult for deceivers to control. Although a deceiver can control emotions in their face, it is difficult to control their nervous movements, such as their feet and hand.
On 2nd December 2022, my friend Jack called me and asked whether we would meet at the school Cafeteria. I felt his voice's seriousness and had to turn back since I was heading home. When I met him, he explained that he was depressed because of his increasing weight. I engaged him and asked questions like what do you think you can do about your situation? After the meeting, Jack changed his attitude and was ready to see a therapist and start his weight loss journey. The experience can be explained using the link between behavior and attitude. As seen, more attitude change is produced by having the other person generate an argument.
