Violence is far from inevitable in a society where there exists people of different characters and behaviors. Therefore, societies enact diverse measures and actions to understand, control, and deal with violent actions. Different societies take different approaches to control different violent actions, for instance death penalty, incarceration, and gun violence control. These actions are enacted with a purpose of reducing or curbing violence in the society, but issues have been raised concerning their effectiveness. Therefore, this essay focuses on how the violence is related to the society and how it tries to understand and deal with it.
Murder is one of the issues considered violent and unacceptable in the society. Different societies use diverse measures to counter it. A few countries, inclusive of US, are among the countries that still embrace death penalty for capital crimes such as murder. Additionally, the issue of possession of guns in the society is another issue that most societies discourage, therefore, there are various gun control measures instituted to control custody of guns. Another major issue connected to the society is incarceration, which refers to locking up the sentenced offenders. All these issues are ways of dealing with and controlling violence in the society. However, questions are raised concerning the effectiveness of these violence control measures to the target goal.
Mostly violence control methods are aimed at specific or general deterrent where the punishment imposed on offenders is meant to prevent further crimes from the offender or potential offenders. Most of the times, the aim of the control measures are conflicting with other societal issues such as the morality of society about death penalty, stigmatization in incarceration, and the effectiveness of gun control methods.
