Introduction
Over the previous few years, women have made amazing progress in taking up various roles in business management; however, few have risen to sport leadership positions and other sport management areas. Over the years, the sports industry and market has expanded greatly concerning the investment made into the industry, the number of employees in the industry and more importantly the amount of revenue generated from the sports market. This has produced numerous employment opportunities in this field, among them leadership and management opportunities. With these increasing opportunities, candidates willing to cease these opportunities have been met by ethnic and gender-based barriers. For instance, it is only after the 1980s that the media raised the awareness of the persistent exclusion of the black community as well as other marginalized communities from sports participation and management (Coakley, 2001). On the other hand, gender stereotyping have been the main barrier for women to entry in sports leadership. Apart from this, women remain adamant to cease the numerous sporting management opportunities. This paper aims at analyzing the barriers based on gender and ethnicity that have continued to affect sports leadership.
