Alvin Brown is the incumbent Mayor of Jacksonville, Florida. Alvin has belted in a couple of accomplishments in Jacksonville’s political scene. In 2011, he became the first African-American to get elected to that position in that area, and has over the years, made policies that shaped up the life of all locals. Some of his policies received a mix reaction. He impacted the constituents differently; something that is expected to affect his bid for re-election in the forthcoming election. This paper purposes to look at some of these policies, the response by the city council and their eventual effect on the society.
Some of Alvin’s policies were simple and non-controversial in nature. He launched the "Community Wealth Building Initiative," in his first business building conference that aimed at helping neighborhoods based companies expand their production levels by offering financial support. The initiative also partnered with Not for Profit organizations such as Operation HOPE NGO, with the aim of uplifting the poor community in the Northwest of Jacksonville. This initiative has been very successful. In fact, the Department of Commerce donated a $2.5 million grant to fuel their expansion to other cities across the country.
Another notable initiative is the Mayor’s Mentor Program that aims at mentoring young high school students. The mentors often cooperate with the Mayor’s office in assisting the students with their transition to university. The program assigns volunteer mentors to students in Duval County Public Schools. Currently, over 600 instructors have been successfully recruited into the local mentorship programs. This program has significantly affected the way students learn and has greatly helped students by ensuring that they have enough support to excel academically. .
One of his most famous initiatives is the Military and Veteran Oriental Initiative, which include annual summits. Summits discuss sensitive issues concerning military veterans and try to help their adjustment to the society. It highlights some of their problems and propels reasonable ways of solving them such as offering jobs opportunities to ex-military veterans. Jacksonville has the largest number of military veterans in the state of Florida. Mayor Alvin Brown’s concentration on the group provides an excellent service to the entire society.
