Sustainable Development Goals
The Sustainable development goals (SDGS) were launched after Millennium Development Goals (MDGS) conclusion in 2015 (Griggs et.al, 2013). The Sustainable Development Goals picked up from 2016 to 2030. The Sustainable Development Goals refers to a new universal set of goals that United Nation member’s states adopted and are expected to use them in formulating and implementing their development policies (Waage et.al, 2015). These goals are many but are reasonable and achievable. They touch all sectors of the economy. The seventeen goals include;
Goal 1: ending poverty in all dimensions,
Goal 2: Promoting food security and reducing hunger
Goal 3: Improving health standards across all the ages
Goal 4: Achieving equal access to education by all gender
Goal 5: Promoting gender empowerment to girls and women
Goal 6: Access to infrastructural development (sanitation and water)
Goal 7: Promoting energy
Goal 8: Enhancing and promoting shared economic growth
Goal 9: Promoting innovation and industrialization sustainability
Goal 10: Reducing inequalities within and among states
Goal 11: Making cities and human settlements sustainable
Goal 12: Ensure sustainable production and consumption patterns
Goal 13: Dealing with impacts of climate change
Goal 14: Promoting sustainable use of seas, oceans and marine resources
Goal 15: Achieving sustainable ecosystem
Goal 16: Promoting peace and justice in all societies
Goal 17: Promoting global partnership to achieve sustainable development
There are at least 169 targets across the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The first set of the goal is reducing poverty level by 50 percent of the world population living in abstract poverty by 2030 (Hбk et.al, 2016). Achieving this set of goal requires individual participation, not just the government alone. The Millennium Development Goals of 2015 never achieved its goals on poverty reduction. For instance, the research revealed that by 2015 more than 800 million people were still living on less than $ 1.25 a day.
Additionally, under the fifth goal of Sustainable Development Goals, the prime target is to eliminate gender violence against women. This goal can be achieved through campaigns and movement in the education sector, workplaces, health care institutions and government institutions (Keesstra et.al, 2016). Women play a significant role in economic growth in many countries. For instance, they contribute heavily to the growth of the informal sector in almost every country’s economy. Significantly, this goal cannot be achieved if girls and women are not fully empowered in our society. Moreover, it’s important to note that, Millennium Development Goal agenda on women empowerment did not achieve its objective. Hawkes and Popkin (2015) observe that millions of women are still dying in birth, and fighting hard for their rights.
Conclusion
The Sustainable development goals are many, but they are Achievable if all sectors of economy including; general public, financial institutions, and the government can participate fully towards achieving these goals (Keesstra et.al, 2016). However, all the 17 goals cannot be achieved, though there will be few indicators of progress in these goals. The major constraints for the effectiveness of these goals are funding and government implementation of these goals in their policy framewor...
