Introduction
Social media is a website or platform that allows its users to create, share information and to participate in social networking, forums and blogging in real-time (Khan, Swar & Lee, 2014). Social media can be traced back in the 1990s when an app named Six Degrees was created. The app made it possible for the users to add a profile and use it to connect with other users. The invention of blogging in 1997 led to the social media frenzy as it is known today. Social media has brought about several changes in how individuals communicate and interact. Communication has been made easier as opinions, photos and videos can be shared in real-time. This paper will discuss the advantages of using social media, how to use social media to influence change and the ranking of the most used social media platforms.
