The Psychosocial Development Theory (Essay Sample)

Instructions:
The Psychosocial Development Theory by Erik Erikson identifies eight developmental stages that human beings undergo with each stage being characterized by a main conflict that a person has to solve in order to grow up to be a healthy individual. A successful resolution of these conflicts results in the emergence of such essential virtues as hope, will, purpose, and integrity, whereas failure can lead to psychological issues or maladaptive behaviors . In comparison to the psychosexual theory by Sigmund Freud, Erikson focuses on life-long development as influenced by social relations and the environment. The stage develops on the one before it, and has a long-term effect on personality and interpersonal behavior. source..

Introduction to the Theory of Erikson. The Psychosocial Development Theory by Erik Erikson identifies eight developmental stages that human beings undergo with each stage being characterized by a main conflict that a person has to solve in order to grow up to be a healthy individual. A successful resolution of these conflicts results in the emergence of such essential virtues as hope, will, purpose, and integrity, whereas failure can lead to psychological issues or maladaptive behaviors (Simply Psychology, 2023). In comparison to the psychosexual theory by Sigmund Freud, Erikson focuses on life-long development as influenced by social relations and the environment. Industry vs. Inferiority (Ages 612) I had the experience of industry versus inferiority in my elementary school days. This phase is aimed at competence building in terms of achievements and recognition. I used to strive to be approved by teachers and parents, and they supported me in developing confidence in my academic skills. Nonetheless, I used to deem myself inferior when I was compared to other students who were good at sports. These instances were a conflict between competence and self-doubt. In general, the favorable reinforcement of positive behavior by the teacher and family encouraged me to work hard and acquire a good working spirit. Identity vs. Role Confusion (Ages 12 -18) My identity was formed during the adolescence stage. Erikson argues that this is the stage during which there is the need to have a sense of self. High school was a time when I tried various interests, social circles, and activities to learn more about my values and objectives. The counselor and support of my close friends played a key role in making me identify with my strengths. In this process, I could develop a coherent and consistent image of myself and it minimized confusion and enhanced my identity. Intimacy vs. Isolation (Ages 1840) During the early adulthood, the major issue is to establish meaningful relationships. At first, I had a weakness in feeling vulnerable as I went to college and it was challenging to establish meaningful connections. However, as time progressed, I also found that openness and emotional honesty are vital to strong relationships. Through building trust with friends and mentors, I managed to build supportive and constructive relationships. These events reaffirmed the value of being empathetic and understanding each other in developing emotional intimacy. Theory of Research: Ego Integrity. Evidence backs the notion of Erikson that the previous developmental stages affect the future outcomes. According to the results of a study by the American Psychological Association (2020), realizing the previous sta...
