Theoretical and Conceptual Frameworks
It is undeniable that many people have confused theoretical and conceptual frameworks and used them almost interchangeably. However, the two concepts have sharp differences and apply in different situations. According to Grant and Osanloo (2014), a theoretical framework refers to the platform or the “blueprint” upon which research builds. A theoretical framework is like the structural design that dictates and shows where every feature or element will occupy. For instance, in the phenomenological study by Arnold (2015), the earlier discussions before the theoretical frameworks appeared disorganized, but the situation changed after the revelation of the theories. It is after the announcement of the approaches that various aspects of a survey began to assume the rightful, chronological, and logical positions. The theoretical framework offers the grounding base or anchorage for analysis, methods, and literature review (Grant & Osanloo, 2014). In the survey by Arnold (2015), it was until the declaration of the theoretical frameworks that it was possible to reveal methodology, research design, literature review, data collection, and analysis.
