Theoretical Foundations of Social Policy and Advocacy for Vulnerable Populations Section 1: Theory to Policy Connection Vulnerable populations are the most affected by social injustice; therefore, they require support through social work policy. The critical theory is the social work theory that has significantly influenced policy to support vulnerable populations. Critical theory focuses on social change that aims to reduce wider oppression in society, which is mostly subjected to a specific group of people. The theory has been applied in addressing oppressive social work situations, pointing out injustices, and focusing on marginalized groups. The theory also emphasizes social change that focuses on empowerment and social cohesion. Section 2: Theory in Practice Critical theory has been applied to reform policies and advocate for social practices that challenge social injustices. The theory best practice interventions for vulnerable populations that social workers have applied include legislative advocacy and organizing the community to ensure the policies do not discriminate against vulnerable populations and that there is equality. Community organizing that social workers may engage in to effectively apply the theory also aims to reduce oppression that vulnerable populations may face due to their status (Payne, 2021...
