Introduction
Galveston Hurricane is one of the deadliest natural disasters in period 1900 in America, claiming around 8000 lives (History, 2021). Natural disasters are events with very adverse effects which take place from the earth's natural processes. They are events like floods, storms, hurricanes, eruptions, tornadoes, and tsunamis. Hurricane is a storm that forms over tropical or subtropical waters with sustained winds reaching 74mph. The disaster happened in the Texas- Galveston, surging its coastline. The hurricane destroyed buildings in the city of Galveston, leaving tens of thousands of people homeless. It also brought flooding and thunderstorms in the Caribbean areas (Jillson, 2019). The hurricane brought Great Dane throughout the United States, and it's estimated to have caused damage worth more than $35 million.
The magnitude of the disaster caused by the hurricane could have been lesser if suitable measures could have been put in place (Davlasheridze et al., 2019). For instance, United States meteorological department had wrongly forecasted the weather. One of the reasons why it was difficult to correctly predict the weather was poor communication which affected the report. Therefore, several measures could be put in place to ensure minimum impact in the future should the event occur.
For example, to prevent such adverse effects from happening in the future, it is essential to look at these failures and improve them. The country's weather bureau needs to improve on communication channels both internationally and locally. It is also crucial to have excellent and accurate forecasting to forecast and accurately communicate the storm's path. Additionally, there is a need to have good functional emergency plans to ensure once prediction of a hurricane occurs, they can be set to evacuate people from the affected area in the shortest time possible.
Secondly, more studies should be done on natural disasters such as hurricanes to help the community know how to react—for example, moving from lower areas that can be affected by floods or moving from danger zones in emergencies. Such is achievable if there is a good forecasting team that can correctly predict the possibility of a natural disaster and warns the community about such disasters.
Thirdly, there is a need to build barriers that can protect hurricanes from hitting a town, such as making a seawall (Rooze et al., 2018). Such massive seawalls would react by breaking the swells, hence saving most lives and properties. The walls would also help turn back the generated sea waves, which is vital in defeating hurricanes.
Fourthly, raising the level of cities along the coastal regions would also be another way of curbing or reducing impacts in future should such events occur. Such is because many of the cities along these regions have been affected by frequent floods and hurricanes; hence, raising their levels would help keep floods at bay.
Finally, the government needs to learn not to mix politics with crucial matters that affect people's lives, like natural disasters. In the case of the hurricane, the government played politics with such a delicate matter. For instance, the government reacted by cutting communication with Cuba, which led to losing many lives. Life matters ought to be taken with ultimate seriousn
