Homeland security is the national effort that is directed towards preventing terrorist attacks in the US. The efforts are also aimed at minimizing damage that could result from an already occurred attack. The term came into existence due to the reorganization of the government agencies of the US in 2003 (Sui, 2008, p. 93). This was after the terrorist attack that occurred in the September of the same year. A foundation for homeland security details that the successful accomplishments of technology have assisted to secure the homeland since they have brought forth a sound framework that has reduced the vulnerability of the US to future attacks.
Technological development has resulted to the bolstering of the border security. This was achieved through the creation and deployment of the nuclear detection equipment along the border of the US. The equipment is also used in seaports and airports to detect and prevent the trafficking of radioactive and nuclear materials (Sui, 2008, p. 126). The equipment has boosted homeland security because it helps in the identification of optimal detection solutions for users. It also supports research and development since it allows the department of homeland security to evaluate how the prototype technologies perform against the other existing state and commercial detection systems.
Developments in technology have boosted the homeland security by providing the fore-warning system for bio-threats. This was achieved through the cooperative effort that is evident in the homeland security department. This project was also boosted by the Environmental Protection Agency, the disease control centers, the Project Bio Watch and the network for preventing laboratory response (Sui, 2008, p. 131). The system uses analytics to promote public safety. It is designed to monitor a wide array of data sets including the detection of biological threats and social media.
Technological improvement has facilitated the development of new medical countermeasures against both current and future radiological, biological, chemical and nuclear threats. This was achieved through the Project Bio Shield (Sui, 2008, p. 495). This is an initiative that the president signed into law in 2004. The program supported the purchase of vaccines that would be useful in case of a bioterrorist attack.
The improvements in the technology have benefitted the progress towards homeland security. This is because the NUSTL is programmatically aligned to technology.
