Lockdown: Learning and Teaching During COVID‐19 School Closures. The Reading Teacher, 74(3), 243-
The article looks at how learning has been carried out during the COVID-19 lockdown. Due to the rapid spread of the virus and increase in mortality rates due to COVID-19, most face-to-face interactions were limited across the world. This includes schools from basic studies to tertiary. However, most schools have incorporated digital learning. Thus, the article focuses on examining how both the students and the educators coped with the COVID-19 restrictions and some of the measures adopted for the success of virtual learning.
The article assesses how learning was carried out during the COVID-19 lockdown restriction and the impact the regulations had on the schools, educators, and students in the United States. Notably, the authors also look at some of the diversification measures and practices during the restrictions. Also, the article examines how the immediate virtual environment was vital.
Despite COVID-19 being a health hazard, the education system has also been greatly affected. Interruption in schools occurred due to the adoption of virtual learning systems. As a result, students would thus be affected by the long-term harmful consequences of virtual learning such as self-isolation. Hence, this article offers a strong thesis since it is crucial to examine if students are gaining from virtual learning or not.
The thesis brings out solid grounds of study. With virtual learning, students fail to actively interact with the educators for formal education since most of the assessments are just administered for completion, and the teacher may fail to understand if the student comprehends or not. On the other hand, due to the lack of preparation of the educators, are the educators able to cope with the virtual learning environment. In the case of the students, despite the familiarity of the social media platforms, during the lockdown restrictions, are the students capable of meeting the unique demands posed by virtual learning.
Method of investigation used includes case studies and literature review and observation, especially during the zoom classes and performance of the students during assessments. As a result, the data obtained from the article shows that literacy is more of social interaction other than face-to-face interaction. Hence, even in the absence of physical touch, learning is also possible. Besides, with the use of virtual learning, more engagement mechanisms increase, such as zoom.
Conclusively, the COVID-19 pandemic led to sudden changes in society. Extraordinary measures were incorporated in the United States schools, thus calling for significant adaptation for teachers, students, parents, schools, and the entire community. However, with the advanced technology in the modern age, virtual learning was possible to enhance the continuation of education during the lockdown restrictions. In a nutshell, the empowerment of the teachers would aid in more effortless transformation in the education system.
The article fits in the bigger picture since most countries worldwide have adopted the virtual learning mechanism. The virtual learning method is vital due to time management, easier students’ tracking and progress monitoring, and faster sharing of information
