The rate at which technology evolves is unrivaled, and it is fascinating to imagine how the future will be twenty years from now. Over the past few decades, there has been a radical technological advancement in various sectors: smartphones replaced big bulky phones, digital cameras eliminated the use of digital films, music can be now accessed digitally making the use of compact disks obsolete, et cetera. In the foreseeable future, new technologies in transport, engineering, and energy will revolutionize how we live, work and travel.
In twenty years’ time, there will be efficient and fast methods of transportation. From driverless car to drones, hyperloop trains to interplanetary travel, the future of transportation is sure set for a total transformation. Autonomous vehicles will be not only legal but also compulsory. Self-driving cars promise safety and efficiency. Moreover, they will encourage the sharing of cars, easing our roads of congestion (Codrington, 2016). Drones will be common place with their application ranging from package delivery to search and rescue missions (Love, 2013). A high-speed propulsion system, a Hyperloop, will make it possible to move from cities across continents at lightening speeds. Space travel, for example to Mars, will be possible, which will promise us new resources and possibly a second home (Muoio, 2016).
The efficiency and accuracy that technology provides will transform how we do our day-to-day activities, change the workplace, and make business more competitive. According to Muoio (2016), Artificial Intelligence coupled with robotics will see robots working in homes and providing companionship to people. There are already plans to build robots aimed at helping people do basic jobs around the house. Efficiency is a valued aspect of industrial production and can be realized with the use of machines. Robotics could have advanced and will replace the use of human labor in many industries. Moreover, with 3D technology will have matured to the extent that individuals can print anything they want at home (Dunne. 2016). Likewise, as Muoio (2016) suggests, architects too can employ 3D printing to construct affordable houses, which will be a great deal as urban centers are becoming more crowded.
We could ultimately depend on renewable energy. By 2037, there will be no need to use fossil fuels to power cars, houses or industrial machinery. Codrington (2016) believes that technology will improve the methods of harvesting and storing solar energy to the extent of making it the chief source of energy on earth. For instance, underwater cabling can make it possible to use solar power from deserts to power an entire country (Muoio, 2016).
