Introduction
Democracy as a form of government is widely accepted and used across many countries in the world. The few countries that have not embraced the same are constantly urged to embrace it. It is also ease to argue that democracy is an excellent form of government by simply looking at its features, but this is not the case when the same is explored thoroughly. The words of Winston Churchill that "democracy is the worst form of government’’ make a lot of sense by basing on the many wrongs that can be associated with modern democracy. The discussion of this paper is to justify Winston’s claim by highlighting the wrongs in the modern democracy.
Discussion
Some of the problems that can be associated with modern democracy are misinformation of the public by the media, government domination of the economy and the unwillingness of the government to open up for meaningful participation by the public in the political process as well as the practice of making decisions. Te impact of these problems is so severe, and as such, it is fair enough to label democracy as the worst form of government among the other identified forms of governments.
The media has failed to play its important role in the society by misinforming the society .In his research, Fog (2004, par 5) associates problem with modern democracy whereby is a conglomerate of multinational and self interest driven persons who are anti-democratic hence their support for the status quo. Such media do not support serious debates which leave the voter disinterested, confused and brain-washed by "cheap’’ political propaganda and slogans. The type of political news also aired is based on personalities rather than promoting ideology, which is an important aspect of constructive politics (Fog, 2004, par 5)
Modern democracy has encouraged the government domination of the economy. The economy of many of the democratic nations is controlled by a few individuals mostly in the government or those having some ties with government officials. This approach has failed to result to economic development because such development can only be achieved by reducing the poverty levels and also focusing on the middle class. Madland (2011) bases his argument on the book "The General Theory of Employment, interest, and Money by Keynes, J. Maynard that the middle class and the poor in the society should be the centrality of attention to achieve economic development.
The Unwillingness by the government to open the door for meaningful participation by the public in the political process as well as the practice of making decisions another problem than can be associated with modern Democracy. Participation can be through debates and asking questions, an aspect which the media can better fulfill. However, this is not possible because of political interest and commercial greed of the media owners (Fog, 2004, par 6).
