The Kamchay Hydropower Dam is located in Teuk Chhu district of Kampot province. The project is the first large-scale dam in Cambodia with a capacity of generating up to 498 GWh annually. The primary benefits of the Kamchay Hydropower project included the generation of reliable, clean and cheap electricity to the population and industries. However, the project raised various concerns from different stakeholders regarding the impacts on the environment and the possible effects on the agricultural sector of the Kampot province. Some of the Environmental Impact Analysis reports were approved after the completion of the project leading to adverse effects of its construction to the environment. The Kamchay Hydropower project causes various positive and negative impact on the environment and agricultural sector in Cambodia.
The initial Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the region indicated that the construction and completion of the Kamchay Hydropower Dam would have minimal adverse effects on the environment. The authorities concentrated more on the benefits of the project that included the direct and indirect influence on the economic growth and reduction in poverty across the country. The draft report further indicated that the dam would provide water for irrigation, reduce downstream flooding, provide clean water for drinking, maintain water volumes, and mitigate soil erosion.
