Michael Jordan is an American Icon

What makes Michael Jordan an American Icon? Some may argue that his contribution in transforming American sports especially basketball. Others may still be wowed by his reputation and impeccable on court instincts and the dramatic high-flying slam dunks. Whether it is fo the admiration of the 23 brand that rocks the world clothes and fashion markets or the memories of his magic on the court, both are rational reasons that cement Michael Jordan’s iconic status. However, the values of Michael Jordan teaches and understanding them in the perspective of the United States of America lays bare facts and interesting socially relevant material. Michael Jordan is an American Icon because he showcases not only American but exemplary personal values that can be used as lessons to all generations: he represents a perfect example of what happens when one lets go of their expectations, maintains discipline and professionalism and a good example of how determination and practice shapes one as a human, an athlete or sports person.
Before any further analysis on Michael Jordan’s Iconic stature, an illustration of “American Icon” would be important. Sander Peirce, an American philosopher in the 20th century interpreted an “icon” as a “sign”. His definition was based on relation of a sign to its object. To him, “A sign is an object which stands for another object to some mind” and an icon was a special type of sign. In history and Eastern Christian Tradition, an “icon” was  a representation of sacred personages or events in mural painting, mosaic, or wood. In short, an icon may be a representation of a divine connection such as images of saints. For instance, a picture of a dove does not represent a doe literally but the characteristics of what it stands for. A dove is a sign of peace in some religious groups and its white feathers is a symbol of peace and purity. Consequently, an “American icon” as one would conclude is “ a person regarded as a political, historical or entertainment symbol or as a symbol of a belief or cultural movement.”. In addition, American icons enjoy wide recognition and are regarded as some of the custodians and bearers of the American culture and history. Whether it is Barack Obama’s iconic slogan “ Yes we can” , Martin Luther King’s I have a dream or Jerry West’s image as a silhouette of NBA’s logo, , American icons have long impacted America, as they have simultaneously represented American characteristics. Michael Jordan is no different. He represents outstanding characters , people of great will, go gaiters and his lessons on letting go of expectations and the American way.
