THE MAKING OF THE RAPE OF NANKING
The making of the rape of Nanking is a book written by Takashi Yoshida about the 1937–1938 Nanking Massacre, the butchery, and carnage committed by the Imperial Army from Japan after it took captive of Nanjing, then capital of China, during the Second War. It defines the proceedings leading up to the Nanking Massacre and the mayhem that was committed. It is known that the military army forces of Japan committed extensive atrocities after the city fell, executing large numbers of people throughout both the Battle of Nanjing and in its outcome. Yet, the precise details of the war crimes how many people were killed through the battle? How many after? How many females were raped? Were inmates executed? How horrifying were the acts committed? Are the source of disagreement among citizens of Japan, China, and America historians to this day?
It was one of the first books to make Western readers aware of the happenings that took place and indeed some in the East, due to nationalists of Japan disagreeing the events took place and hesitance from surviving victims to discuss it openly. The book received both praise and criticism from the public and by scholars 1. It has been acclaimed as an “effort that shows more clearly the degree and brutality of the incident while at the same time it was criticised as seriously defective and full of propaganda and ridiculous explanations” 2 (.Takashi. 2009) The structure of the book is put into three main parts.
