New-generation jails are facilities with a popular architectural design and management policies that emphasize the interaction between inmates and staff. To relieve overcrowding and improve effectiveness, the building booms of new jails are underway. These new-generation jails are building to improve the effectiveness and safety of all parties involved. The new pod-like structure gives correction officers continuous observation of inmates to maintain security and stability. The new-generation jails approach tries to manage human behavior positively, consistently, and impartially. Change always occurs at the prison facility, are the new generation jails a step in the right direction. The majority of the modern generation jails are using new designs as opposed to traditional structures. The prisons are designed in an intermittent surveillance with both multiple and single cells that are perpendicular to each other leaving wider corridors in between them. This gives correctional offers to visit easily cell or regular patrol to observe activities of the inmates. This means that the cells are structured to provide easier supervisions of inmates.[Morris, Holly. Adventure Divas: Searching the Globe for a New Kind of Heroine (New York: Villard, 2005), 56]
The new generation of cells provides maximum regular observation of inmates. These jails offer two methods of supervision. First, there is direct supervision where cells are grouped together or clustered and surrounded by pods that contain tables, television and seats. In this pod, a correctional officer sits in a particular position where the inmates can easily see him or her. The officer’s station is designed in a way that it can provide a wide view of all inmates. The positioned officer is made more aware of what the inmates are doing, and therefore he or she can directly control them through face to face relationships. This kind of modern design provides a healthier working environment for the officers in control and inmates they control. The direct interaction between the officers and inmates increases monitoring on the offenders (Tewksbury, 81).
During day time, the prisoners are allowed to stay in the open rooms and are prohibited from going into their rooms unless they are directed by the officers in charge or duty during that particular time. Unlike the traditional jails where offenders were closed indoors, the modern prisons allow the prisoners to watch their favorite movies, television shows and enjoy themselves with various broadcasts at open rooms while being inspected by the assigned correctional officer. There is a panel that is appointed in supervising the inmates on day to day basis. This means that if the supervising officers leave the room, another committee officer immediately takes place to control the situation. In case of trouble within the common room, the offer in supervision leaves the room for the other officer from the control panel to come in and take control of the situation. The officer from the control panel puts on some communication devices monitored by surveillance cameras. The open room is covered with surveillance cameras to monitor all happenings within the room.
On the centrally, indirect supervision resembles the above-discussed structure of the directly supervised one. However, the officer in duty is positioned in a secure place. The room is highly modernized as it is fitted with cameras and other communicational devices that are linked to the common room where the inmates are. This provides an easier way for the correctional officer to monitor and regularly communicate with the inmates. The designations and construction of the new generation cells, therefore, provides constant supervision and observation of inmates. The architectural design provides room for smaller and manageable groups of prisoners.
In case of the single occupancy cells, there are common rooms where the inmates freely join others for socialization. Such cell can contain sixteen to forty-six cells surrounding a common room. A total of twenty-four correctional officers is designated duty to monitor and supervise the inmates. In some jails, transparent walls separate the correctional officers and inmates whine in others, officers manage from a vantage point that is designed for him or her. In other words, doors, gates of walls that used to separate the inmates and the officers in charge at past are never used in the present day digital generation of cells. Unlike the traditional cell where the wall were furnished d with heavy metals or concrete, modern generation cell is commonly furnished with gorgeous glasses or boards. Toilets and sinks are nicely made .for instance in most of the jails, the sinks and toilets are porcelain .however the behavior of the prisoners are monitored carefully.
The cells are designed in a way that violence and stress amongst the inmates are no longer present. The prisoners can now seat on bolstered seats and carpeted dayrooms designed to alleviate privacy and stressful life. The walls of the modern day generation are colored with beautiful as well as attractive cells to reduce emotional behaviors. The officers control and supervise the inmates through frequently communications guidance and counseling and application of leadership skills. In other words, the prisoners are handled in a friendly manner rather than the brutal ways that used to happen during ancient times. Therefore, collocation officers are just like other parents because they can guide, counsel and impact skill to the prisoners. Disciplining inmates is done fairly, and justice is observed.
The new generation cells are designed to control negative behaviors. Sometimes psychologists and counselors are outsourced by the jails to impact knowledge to the criminal. The officers in charge are housed next to the inmates so as to provide a twenty-four-hour basis supervision. However, the inmates who are disturbance are quickly isolated and taken to a higher room that has tighter security. Visitations are done during the daytime and on specified days. Bathrooms are regularly supervised. Further, noises from the inmates are totally controlled since the prisoners are grouped into smaller manageable groups. In addition, the design of the new generation cells provides a comfort for staff and hence increases their morale as well as a passion for their jobs.[Siegel, Larry J, and Joseph J. Senna. Essentials of Criminal Justice (Belmont: Wadsworth Cengage Learning, 2009), 54.]
