Battle of Saratoga
The battle of Saratoga was one of the most important American revolutionary wars. It was a sign of colonial victory for the American against the British colonists. The Americans gained confidence and were able to persuade the Spanish, French and the Dutch to join forces and fight against the British as it was their common enemy.
It was on September 1777 when the battle of Saratoga began and ended the same year in October. The battle consisted of two battles which was the battle of Freeman’s Farm and the battle of Bemis Heights. The first battle of Saratoga occurred in John Freeman’s farm near Saratoga county, New York on September 19. Daniel Morgan, the American colonel, led his 500 sharpshooters in attacking the British army in the open field . Many British officers had been taken down before the second troop commanded by General John Burgoyne arrived and took over the field. At the end of the battle, the British had nearly 700 officers wounded and 440 deaths while the Americans had 240 wounded officers and 90 deaths. Despite the British taking over the battle, they lost many men compared to the Americans.[. After the first battle, Gen. Horatio Gates ordered his American men to set up defenses at Bemis Heights. His troop grew bigger up to 13,000 as more men were added. On the other hand, General Burgoyne continued waiting for reinforcements from Gen. Sir Henry Clinton in New York which never took place. On October 7, Burgoyne launched an attack on the American troops. With the help of Brig. Gen. Benedict Arnold, the Americans defeated the British on October 17.[.
