Introduction
The First World War affected both in the economic and political. They can be reduced to the economic and colonial antagonism between the main industrial powers like France, England, and Germany. In addition, besides a strong competition for the search for new markets and raw materials, some territorial conflicts related with a nationalist nature arose, causing tensions and clashes between European countries. In this complex panorama, some nations wanted to recover historical territories lost in past wars. It was also intended to reunify people with a common origin, as in the case of Germany which sought to group in a great empire all people belonging to Germanic and Serbian origin. The trigger for the war was the well-known historical fact happened in Sarajevo when the heir to the Austro-Hungarian crown was murdered. Nevertheless, the participation of other countries in the war, in particular the U.S. was primarily about the personal interests, which established supporters and opponents of entering the war.
Purpose and the Central Thesis of the Author
The paper describes the intention of the United States’ president to declare war on Germany. This situation would allow the country to participate fully in it. The article presents opinions expressed for some senators during the debates in 1917 to approve this request.
