Modern democracy refers to a form of government, where the constitution of a nation grants fundamental personal, political rights, and also guarantees fair and free election and an independent court of law. It tends to differ from the ancient democracy because of the principles it has which are equality and freedom, unlike the old democracy which only allowed the adults to vote. Modern democracy has been criticized by many scholars because the wrong it manifests in the society. For an example, Winston Churchill has strongly opposed it, therefore, for further understanding; the paper will discuss the harm of modern democracy to establish the truthiness of Winston’s claim.
Scholars have tried to mention the wrong of modern democracy. For an instance, modern democracy exposes citizen to make irrational choices. Majority of democratic countries, it has been the order of the day that, it’s the ordinary citizen who has the right to elect their legislature and other authorities. Research has demonstrated that only few citizens are aware of the political conditions of their countries. Modern democracy has contributed to authorities loosing focus. In many scenarios, the democratic governments are always destined to change after every election periods. Authorities functions as driven by interim ambitions. The culture of going to an election after the end of service of every term makes the elected leaders lose focus of the obligations they have to the ordinary citizen. Mostly, they keep on focusing on how they will win the next election thus forget the interest of the citizen. It has also brought about slowing down of things; it has made those in authority to do what they wish regardless of the desires of the ordinary citizen.
Modern democracy lowers moral standard. In many cases, the sole goal of the candidates is to win, they never care about the practices they will use for them to get elected. In most circumstances, they use underhand methods and foul means to convince the electorate to choose them. In some occasions, there can be character assassination and ethical strategies as long as someone will win. Many power and muscle power also works hand in hand to ensure a candidate wins. Therefore, morality is highly practiced, and the worst of it all occurs when a candidate becomes a loser.
Research has also demonstrated that, modern democracy is a government of the rich. If adequately analyzed, it will be found that modern democracy is capitalistic. It applies the rule of capitalists. For someone to be a candidate, he or she needs to have money. The wealthy candidates tend to use the money to buy votes. The high class tends to take control of the whole process. During the campaign period, the wealthy candidates hold the media and use it for personal interest.
