Students must submit a research essay on how judges are selected in the Texas judiciary. Your essay must meet the following content, format and submission requirements: CONTENT REQUIREMENTS 1. Identify and explain the current TEXAS law regarding the selection of most judges in Texas. 2. Identify and explain one other type of judicial selection process used in the U.S. 3. Choose the judicial selection method you think is best. 4. Give one reason explaining how and why you made your choice. Possible reasons include: impartiality, accountability and competence of judges. 5. Cite the textbook “Governing Texas” within the body of the paper using the Chicago Manual of Style’s parenthetical citation style also referred to as the author-date format (-25 points if the textbook is not cited). Students may also use additional scholarly sources. A paper with no parenthetical source citations in its body will receive a grade of 0. A paper with no works cited section (a.k.a. list of references, a.k.a. bibliography) at the end of the body will receive a grade of 0. FORMAT REQUIREMENTS: 6. Typed, 1 page (not counting Works Cited Page), 12-point font, double-spaced (-25 if the paper is less than 1 page). 7. An introduction with a thesis/statement of purpose in the first paragraph: “This paper will…” (-10 if this is not done) 8. A logically organized and sequenced body followed by a clearly stated conclusion. 9. Use of the Chicago Manual of Style’s parenthetical citation format (also referred to as the author-date format). Students must be very careful and pay attention to details when they examine and cite internet sources. 10. Use of footnotes or endnotes is prohibited (-25 if this is done). 11. Using encyclopedias, like Wikipedia, Ballotpedia, history.com, kids.law.com, etc. is prohibited (-10 points). 12. Use of word mixers like Spinbot is prohibited and will result in a grade of 0; no second chances will be allowed. Papers are graded according to the following four criteria: 1) content; 2) organization; 3) quality of writing; and 4) quality of research sources and reference citation formats. Students are required to register for, then take this 10-question Plagiarism Certification Test as many times as necessary in order to obtain the Plagiarism Certificate.

Judicial selection is the process that is usually used in the selection of judges in the courts. In the US, judicial selection methods vary at the state level and even for the court types in a state. There are six major judicial selection types, and Texas Supreme Court, nine justices are selected through partisan elections. Those judges serve for a period of six years, and they then have to request to be re-election for those who would like to continue working at the court. For one to be able to serve in the Supreme Court, one has to be a US citizen and to reside in Texas also to be licensed that they do practice the state law, and they should be of the age between 35 – 75, having practiced as a lawyer or a judge for ten years.[Texas Commission on Judicial Selection Final Report.
