THE FUTURE OF US GRAND STRATEGY: A LITERATURE REVIEW

In the past few years, the United States has witnessed much debate regarding the benefits and the drawbacks of its deep engagement grand strategy. Most of the researchers and international relations experts have raised different opinions about the matter. Some argue that the US should maintain its deep engagement to retain its primacy while others suggest it should retrench to lower cost and reduce commitment. The supporters of deep engagement strategy propose that retrenchment would reduce the United States' influence in East Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, thereby risking both economic and security benefits. The war in Afghanistan and Iraq increased pressure for the US to reevaluate its commitments and strategy of maintaining world peace. However, despite these wars, deep engagement remains the optimal grand strategy for the United States to maintain primacy and global security. Therefore, this literature review seeks to explain the benefits of the US deep engagement strategy, the cost of primacy, and the nonsecurity consequences of deep engagement.
