Women's Right in the Muslim World
At the beginning of the 21st century, women's associations operating in the field of women's rights, claimed that the status of women was unenviable in many Muslim countries. They explained that far too many Muslim women live in family contexts characterized by oppression, exploitation, abuse, constant threat of repudiation, polygamy, and domestic violence. They are also victims of discriminatory practices in the workplaces, not to mention the cases of sexual harassment. For many decades, there has been a strong wind of religious conservatism in many Muslim countries, with devastating effects on women's fundamental rights. In the name of a return to the purity of the time of Revelation, Muslim extremist groups have decreed, upon their accession to power in different countries, such as Afghanistan, Malaysia, Somalia or Nigeria, a strict segregation between the sexes in public places, hospitals and educational systems. They imposed on women to wearing clothes such as hijab, niqab or burqa and prohibited them, among other repressive measures, from exercising any professional activity. Under the pretext to apply the Sharia law, they have not only violated the rights that Islam had granted to women since the 7th century, but also the basic rights women had obtained after several decades of fight throughout the Muslim countries in the 20th century.
