What?
I was about to sign out after my shift had ended when an ambulance arrived with patient X on board. She was an eighteen-year-old with a past history of self-harm and suicide attempts. A friend who had accompanied her to the hospital explained that she had found the lady lying unconscious on the floor, with an empty bottle of “unrecognized substance,” prompting her to scream for help before calling an ambulance. I extended my shift and joined the team in attending to the patient until she was admitted to the intensive care unit. The nurse leader joined us and was moving with us in every step, advising, and motivating our efforts. I ended up signing out an hour late than usual, but I was glad that the patient had become conscious by the time I was leaving the hospital. I was eager to meet the patient in the next day for my shift.
So What?
Suicide and self-harm behaviors have become prevalent in children and young people today. According to Townsend et al. (2022), young people who self-harm are victims of social problems at the individual and family level. Tsiachristas et al. (2017) reported that in 2016, the cases of self-harm and attempted suicide in England were 362 per a population of 100,000. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that over 800,000 people commit suicide every day (Large & Kapur, 2018). The incident I encountered at the hospital is one of thousands of cases that go unreported. Nurses and nurse leaders play a significant role in helping patients with self-harm and suicidal ideas (Del Carpio et al., 2021).
