All good managers need leadership skills, but not all effective leaders need management skills
Human Resource (HR) is also referred to Human Resource Management i.e. HRM. It is the management of the labor pool in employment and resources of an organization. On the other hand human resources are a set of individuals who make up the business sector of the organization. These individuals determine the economy of an organization. The power invested by the individuals into the organization will determine whether it will progress or no. Having a strong supply of manpower into the organization helps the managers to have simple time while accessing progress of the company (Werner, Schuler & Jackson, 2012). For many job opportunities to be created in the market, managers require good leadership skills which will enable them widen the scope in the market hence creating job opportunities. Good managers therefore need leadership skills so as to help the company grow in the human resource management sector, finance, legal, management and also economical sector (Amstrong, 2000). The ability of a manager to lead a company effectively is based on most of the leadership skills the individual has. Most of these skills include motivation, enthusiasm, and also the power to build respect from their workers (Amstrong, 2006). This paper therefore is set to discuss the concept that all good managers need leadership skills, but not all effective leaders need management skills.
A manager is the head of the organization. He is always responsible to ensure that the company achieves its goals through efficient communication with its workers and also establishing good coordination in the market (Friday, 2003). In managing a business organization, well qualified managers help build the company strategically by setting objectives that will lead to the company’s success. For example, a manager of a company with great visions will always ensure that he tracks the performance of the company rise steadily, while trying to achieve the required standards in the market efficiently hence leading to the growth of the company. A well set company with good managers will always make sure that their set objectives are achieved in due time (Ulrich, 1997). With good leadership skills, they will be able to seek solutions that are easy to use in the company through negotiations with their competitive companies and finding out what can be done in their companies. A good manager is able to manage the company hence driving it to greater heights. Management is a process whereby managers are able to create a conducive environment for employees in the company to achieve both the set goals of the company and their own goals. Good management originates from well developed leadership skills hence an effective manager requires to be a good leader for whom employees can emulate and respect in the company.
There are so many positions such as those occupied by the HR departments in a company that provide services which benefit it directly or indirectly. This is evident in most companies located in New York where those companies that have a good management strategy governing the human resources area, accounting and finance, yield from their efforts input in the company (O’Neill, 2011). Most of the leaders in the society do not necessarily need management skills since they all are on their way to succeed by commanding respect and trust from their fellow workers. This is because; they do not have to be under an organization to be heard. For this to occur, the leader has to show that he deserves the respect guaranteed to him. Most leaders are not known to manage projects but to lead people to success. Hence learning of management skills would be a waste of time for most leaders in the society. This is the complete opposite of managers since they have to perform the tasks accomplished by a leader of governing workers in the organization while also managing most of the projects running in the background of the company. Hence good managers deserve leadership skills.
Some of the leadership skills that would be of importance to managers are the skills of conquering with crisis that arise, being able to make good use of the miscalculations set by their competitors. This would be done by thinking critically about the problems facing the organization. They should also be able to stand to their principles in order to demand respect.
For sure not all leadership roles require management skills this is because; most of these roles exist in our surrounding and not necessarily in a working environment. Leaders always take the lead even with no management skills. A good example is given in Jones book ‘Management skills in schools: A Resource for School Leaders’, which considers the fact that teachers, who are leaders in education-based organizations, only strategize on what they want to do to their students but can never be interested in management skills since it’s the responsibility of students to coordinate themselves and attend lessons for their own benefit (2004).
Supporting the fact that most leadership skills can be taught, it is good for the managers with poor leadership skills and want their company to succeed to set their mind in order to gain knowledge on how to run it. However, evidence has it that most leaders who are successful in their career have a good personality from the start even without training hence they always succeed in their set objectives. A very good example is John Fitzgerald Kennedy who was inaugurated as the 35th President of the United States who was able to lead his people with charisma without attaining leadership education. He always gave a listening ear to most of his people and cabinet members hence encouraging good relationships during his reign. He never had any skill of management since his leadership skills had more strength in running the country. Hence this supports the fact that most effective leaders do not require management skills.
It is believed that good management skills are the key to success in an organization. I disagree with that point regarding the fact that, most leadership skills facilitate good governance in a company leading to success of the company especially in the ever competing market. These leadership skills include making of decisions in the company which lead to its success. A company which relies on its management is doomed without leadership skills such as making of decisions which help the company resolve most of its problems. A good leader always has a vision for his country in the field of politics. This also is of importance to a company which is on its way to enter the competitive market. Just like leaders need followers in decision- making, managers in companies require employers who heed to their instructions in order to achieve the company’s goals. Hence for a competitive company, leadership skills are required for it to achieve its set objectives.
Motivation lies under leadership skills. It is not visible but its influence is always felt in an organization. A good leader should be able to influence people around him so as to create a good working environment. In the same way, with motivation, a manager can be able to drive his company to greater heights with this invisible trait. In most cases, it is always considered to unveil the dormant part of innovations in the company. This helps the company to gain market into the world. A good manager should be able to have this skill since motivation of workers helps most employees to develop a healthy relationship with them. It also reduces the rate of absenteeism and staff turnover amongst workers (Adair, 1998). This is clear evidence that most good managers require leadership skills in comparison to how leaders will need management skills. Managers who are able to award their workers at a given time of the year, helps them to develop good relationships with them and also build efficient team work. Most workers would prefer to be punctual to work rather that abscond duties so as to impress the manager (The CDR Associates Training Package, 2007).
It is good to note that management skills contain leadership skills all contained in a good leader hence for a company to have a good manager, it is better if he is familiarized with most of the leadership skills. Considering the pyramid below, it is evident that leadership skills hold the highest rank in management of a company
It all starts with a well planned manager in an organization to be able to give instructions so that the organization can be in order following the set objectives. All these lie under the good leadership qualities a leader should have (Forssell, 2008). Hence the point that most leaders should have management skills is not correct since all the skills are incorporated in the way they govern their work. The only difference comes in when one is not able to use the skills in assuming his work as a leader.
A good manager should be able to solve the problems facing his company and as such he is able to manage the company as a whole. Since problem solving is also among the good qualities of a leader, it is urged that most managers should be able to incorporate this virtue in the way they handle their employees. This would improve their chances in the marketing industry hence leading to tremendous profits due to the conducive environment of employees in the organization (Northouse, 2010). It should always be recognized that problems come in different natures in an organization. One which does not have problems is one with no objectives and vision. This is because, most workers tend to cros with their employers due to delay in project completion or something related to that. Discussin...
