Introduction
For teaching practice to be effective, a teacher must prepare before it takes place. In preparation for my teaching practice in English and Literature, which will take place in two hours, I came up with various ways to plan, deliver and assess the teaching process. During my planning, I came up with some documents like schemes of work, lesson outcomes, as well as lesson designs, which will help me cater to all student's individual needs, manage time and achieve the set objectives. Besides, I devised various teaching and learning methods, including lectures, group discussions, fieldwork, assigning projects, and the use of ICT to make content delivery more effective. I also incorporated various forms of assessment, such as oral presentations, written work, and capstone projects, to cater to the wants of every learner. Additionally, I analyzed behavioral management processes and devised ways to establish a safe and inclusive environment for learning. This report incorporates various aspects that I will consider during my teaching practice.
TASK ONE
Analyze the application of pedagogical principles in own area of specialism.
Principles of pedagogy facilitate effective learning and teaching processes. These principles include modeling, deliberate practice, explanation, challenge, questioning, and feedback. Challenging involves giving students complex tasks whereby they are motivated to do research. I will apply this principle by asking students to review and criticize books.
The other principle is a deliberate practice whereby students are shown how to apply skills and knowledge acquired. I will apply this principle by giving my students examples and exercises for revision. Explaining a concept involves describing relevant phenomena and guiding students on new ideas. I will use this principle during class when explaining new and complex concepts, such as new vocabulary.
Another principle is modeling, whereby the teacher engages the students to perform a task. I will apply this principle by having a modeling contest, thus provoking creativity and innovativeness among students. Lastly, I will use the questions-and-feedback principle, which involves giving out tests individually or as a group and asking questions during the lesson. I will administer continuous assessment tests to ensure I track students' progress and ask questions during the session.
Evaluate the effectiveness of the use of creative and innovative approaches in your area of
Specialty
Some innovation and creative approaches I will use when teaching English and Literature include assigning personal projects, individual tests, group discussions, and contests. Group discussions will produce outstanding results since they will enable the learner to be active and vibrant, reducing the monotony associated with the lecture method. Contests will encourage competition among students, thus improving their thinking and creativity. However, this approach may bring about unhealthy competition as students try to outdo each other.
Another creative and innovative approach is assigning personal projects to students according to their area of specialization and interests. This will enable them to creatively come up with the best project accredited at the end of the course. Moreover, I will administer individual tests regularly to encourage my student to revise their notes more often. This will ensure continuous progress in learning.
Explain how your practice in planning inclusive teaching and learning has taken account of
theories, principles, and models of learning, communication, and assessment.
I have considered multiple ideologies, models, as well as principles (Al-Fedaghi, 2012) of communication, assessment, and learning when drafting inclusive teaching and learning. Some methods of communication that I will use is the verbal and non-verbal cues. Oral communication will be used through discussion and sharing of ideas, while non-verbal communication will be used as the learner listens to the instructions and responds through gestures like nodding. A teacher will use non-verbal communication, such as gestures and facial expressions when teaching students with special needs like hearing problems or visual impairments.
The learning model that I shall use is the hands-on model, which involves engaging students during the session. This model ensures that the lesson is learner-centered. This is by introducing activities in which the student participates fully, ensuring that the classroom is lively and inclusive. The assessment method I will use will be question and answer, which will be done orally at the end of the lecture to assess if the scholars have understood.
Another model of assessment I will use is Continuous Assessment Tests, which will show the learner's progress. A CAT will be issued prior to the session to diagnose the initial knowledge of the students and after to assess what the learners have grasped.
There are specific theories of learning, assessment, and communication that I have considered to ensure effective teaching and learning. In behaviorism theory, where reinforcements influence a learner's behavior in their environment, I will introduce rewards like snacks for the student who attains the CAT pass mark. The negative reinforcement I shall introduce is detention for students who arrive late for the session. This will promote time management.
To ensure that all principles of learning, communication, and assessment are met, I will ensure that in learning, there is repetition to ensure that the learner will understand and remember. I will also ensure that all information I give is simple and relevant to the learner, thus making it simple for the learner to relate knowledge to their life experiences.
In communication, I will ensure I am clear on all the words I use and provide a synonym for every complex word I use, which will help them learn new vocabulary and how to use them. In assessment, I will ensure my methods will be reliable, flexible, and valid. All questions will be related to what the students have learned and will be given similar questions to ensure fairness. Generally, these models, theories, and principles will ensure that inclusive teaching and learning have been carried out effectively.
Analyze theories of behavior management.
Effective behavior management is vital for learning to take place. All learners learn differently; hence, it is essential to endorse appropriate behavior management methods (Husung, 2016). Some theories relating to behavior management are operant conditioning, choice theory, and constructivism
Operant conditioning theory by Skinner states that behavioral changes occur from how we respond to environmental events stimulated by positive or negative reinforcement. Positive reinforcement includes praising students for good behaviors and reward ceremonies to ward students with good grades. Negative reinforcement includes punishment for poor behaviors.
Choice theory suggests that behavior is a personal choice. Individuals have the power to control themselves and limited ability to control others. For instance, in a class setup, a learner may pursue geography or history, allowing them to choose the career path they want. This theory increases students' ability to evaluate their choices and self-understanding.
Constructivism states that every learner has a unique way of learning. Some learn faster than others; thus, a teacher must ensure every student's need is met, for instance, by using various teaching methods to attend to every learner's needs. Some students may learn more through group discussions, while others by personal assignments or lecture methods. Slow learners may be given more attention than others. Another strategy is class-ability grouping, where students with the same abilities will be grouped for an effective learning experience.
Explain how your practice in
creating and maintaining a safe, inclusive teaching and learning environment has considered behavior management theories.
I have considered all behavioral management theories: Choice theory, Operant conditioning, and constructivism. In the behaviorism theory of management, I will develop policies relating to managing poor behavior so that learners are aware of the potential consequences of specific bad behaviors. Rewards will be included for learners who will attain the pass mark. Positive reinforcement will be utilized in classrooms by praising and encouraging learners and providing positive feedback. Through this encouragement, learners will attempt to do things independently after the lesson, gaining the confidence to participate more during the lesson.
Additionally, I applied choice theory by allowing learners to choose courses of their own, enabling them to explore their careers. I will create an environment where every learner feels free to express themselves as they give suggestions and opinions, for example, a student who wishes to be an Air hostess will be allowed to do several languages.
I considered various elements of constructive theories in behavioral management processes after recognizing that all learners are unique, requiring specific adaptations to the learning processes. This will ensure an inclusive learning environment and that all students feel a sense of belonging.
Explain how your assessment practice has taken account of theories, models, and principles
of assessment.
During practice, I will incorporate several assessment models throughout the entire program to ensure an effective learning environment for the learner. Some of the assessment models I will use...
