Introduction
This lab exercise aims at analysing data from impact and tensile testing of different metals and polymers with reference to microstructure/ material structure as well as other properties such as crystallinity. As a result, both impact and tensile testing machines are explored in details. Most importantly, mechanical properties of the engineering materials can be obtained by demonstrating that the materials comply with given specifications required for engineering applicationsCITATION Joh17 \p 38 \l 1033 (Kosowatz, 2017, p. 38). For structural components’ safety in railway lines, aircraft, pressure vessels, bridges, etc., the materials’ tensile properties have to be analysed. For this reason, the tensile requirements of the structural application should be met by the materials’ tensile strength
Usually, the metals mechanical properties help in the determination of where it is best suitable for constructionCITATION Jam00 \p 57 \l 1033 (Peraro, 2000, p. 57). Tensile properties can be predicted by the tensile tests. These tests are conducted by subjecting the samples of known dimensions to longitudinal or axial forceCITATION AMa11 \p 99 \l 1033 (Mallat, 2011, p. 99). In practice, these forces are applied to the sample until the failure occurs As a consequence, the corresponding extensions due to the tensile load are then recorded for the analysis of the relationship between stress and strain of the samplesCITATION AEW16 \p 15 \l 1033 (Jarfors, 2016, p. 15). In general, tensile tests can be helpful in the determination of other materials’ mechanical characteristics such as the ultimate strength, the percentage elongation, and yield strength among othersCITATION LDo16 \p 4 \l 1033 (Dobrzanski, 2016, p. 4). Also, the original length of gauge L, the cross-sectional area, or the diameter D used should be recorded since they are used in calculationsCITATION AVi15 \p 1714 \l 1033 (Vinogyadov, 2015, p. 1714).
