Aldous Huxley's Brave New World (Essay Sample)

GUN, WITH OCCASIONAL MUSIC Gun, with Occasional Music, written by Jonathan Lethem is set somewhere in the American west coast in a futuristic year 2008 or around then. It is an odd blend of science fiction and the traditional inquisitor plot set in the near future. The Author sprinkles the world of his leading character Metcalf, a 43-year-old cop-turned-private-investigator who had to leave the police force because of its corruption and compromises, with genetically engineered animals such as parking-lot attendants who are bull dogs, private eyes who are apes, and sheep housekeepers, Babyheads, who are mutated humans The Babyheads take world marginal and menial roles in society. In the midst of all this, is a genetically enhanced law enforcer Joey Castle, who happens to be a kangaroo and is the one who sets to question our lead character. The book is interesting in that it features a world that is little by little being drained of free flowing information, where you require a authorization to ask any kind of serious questions, where there are no written news and the events of the day are to be caught via radio sketches in the form of music. The country is slowly sliding into a police state and the "inquisitors", are progressively taking over, which goes unnoticed by a general population kept contented by the provision of free drugs referred to as "make". The Book does a striking job in weaving the world future in with the past.  Jonathan Lethem has managed to create a highly successful mix of the dark future of cyberpunk replete with wry humor, witty repartee and the gone years of the thirties resulting in a book which that appeal to mystery and science fiction fans and generally has a cross-genre appeal. Brave New World Aldous Huxley's Brave New World is a sinister and bewitching, satirical piece of fiction literature written in 1932. The Brave New World depicted in this book is a disquieting, loveless and even menacing place. Huxley endows his "ideal" society with features intended to alienate his reading audience. Characteristically, a reader going through the book ends up getting the very same disquieting way of thinking just as the people dwelling in the book, no hope of any joyful anticipation. The society depicted here is one living in a nightmare. The book is set in the future but it deals with modern-day issues of the early 20th century. The Brave New World is set in a benevolent dictatorship: an efficient, static, totalitarian welfare-state where war, poverty and crime are absent, poverty or crime.
