Case Study of ICSI Procedure
Introduction
A married couple aged 34 (husband) years and 32 (wife) years have been having issues with conception and have thus decided to seek professional medical help at my facility. The cause of the infertility is the blocked fallopian tubes. Tests have been done on the husband’s semen are healthy. It is thus evident that the blocked fallopian tube is the reason why the couple has not been able to conceive. It is through the fallopian tube that the egg passes to get to the uterus (De Jonge, 2017). It is at the fallopian tube that the egg meets the sperms, and that is where fertilization takes place. After fertilization in the fallopian tube, implantation takes place at the uterus. The causes of the blocked fallopian tubes are pelvic inflammatory disease and sexually transmitted infections. The couple has inquired whether performing Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) would give them a higher chance of fertilization and pregnancy. ICSI is an example of an assisted reproductive treatment that is used to treat infertility problems caused by the blockage of the fallopian tubes or low sperm count. My answer is “yes” since recent scientific studies indicate that ICSI boasts the success rate of pregnancy by 24 percent. Whereas there are other methods that the couple could use to get babies of their own, I would recommend that they, under the ICIS procedure, increase the rate of fertilization and pregnancy.
