Planning and Implementation in Health Promotion and Public Health – An analysis and evaluation of Drinkaware’s ‘Drink Free Days’ Campaign.
Introduction
Launched as an independent charity, Drinkaware is an organisation that has several health promotion campaigns launched in the UK to tackle alcoholism among the general population (Drinkaware – Our Campaigns, 2021). The Drinkaware campaign, ‘Drink Free Days’, along with mentions of few others, will be examined, analysed and evaluated to assess the importance of different factors that contribute towards the success of the campaign, while linking it to important models such as the precede-proceed model to examine its effectiveness. It is important to note that for any health promotion campaign to be successful, problems must be identified, methods to solve these problems must be created, and the implemented program must be continuously evaluated (Sharma, 2016).
Discussion
The background of alcoholism in UK is riddled with many instances of the population having high percentages of alcoholics and high alcohol-consumption rates, which the government has tried to tackle using multiple health campaigns, however, achieving little success (Nicholls, 2014). The drinking trends in the countries within the UK have seen a slow decline in recent years, with alcohol consumption dropping by 16% since 2004 (ONS, 2018). However, another problem that exists lies in the volume of dependent drinkers who do not accessing treatment, which was an estimated 82% of dependent drinkers (PHE – Public Health Dashboard, 2018).
This is one of the reasons as to why the Drinkaware campaign has gained high traction, due to its success in influencing the general population and showing results of lowering the percentage of alcoholics within the UK. Majority of the credit of the success of Drinkaware’s campaigns can be attributed to its planning, implementation and continuous evaluation, which is where models such as the precede-proceed model are proven to be effective (Porter, 2016). The precede-proceed model is an extremely detailed and comprehensive structure towards examining and assessing the health needs required to design, implement and evaluate health promotions, along with other public health programs to meet the needs specified. The PRECEDE aspect of the model deals with creating a solid structure to plan a targeted and specific health program, and includes aspects such as social assessment, epidemiological assessment, ecological assessment, among other factors. The PROCEED aspect deals with creating a structure to implement the created health program and evaluate it in order to improve it in the future (Rural Health Information Hub, 2018).
As defined by Fassin (2009), a stakeholder is any group or individual that can affect or is affected by an organisation meeting its objectives. Due to the large scale of Drinkaware and their campaigns, the organisation has a diverse range of
