Section 1: Research Question
Today, the world is facing several global crises that are a threat to life on the planet. Due to different factors, some of these crises have been highlighted by the media, while others have not found the limelight they deserve, yet, their impact, if left unchecked, could cost the world both lives and money. A good example of the crises that are less often discussed is Antimicrobial resistance (AMR). AMR threatens the effective prevention and treatment of an ever-increasing range of infections caused by bacteria, parasites, viruses, and fungi CITATION WHO14 \l 2057 (WHO, 2014). Antibiotics are medicines that have been manufactured to treat and prevent bacterial infections. In recent years, some of the antibiotics that humans have been relying on treating some of the most common diseases are becoming less effective. With time, the bacteria responsible for these diseases begin to make a resistance to these medicines. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest threats to global health, food security, and development CITATION WHO18 \l 2057 (WHO, 2018).
Antibiotics are one of the most important inventions in the field of medicine. It has literally transformed medicine and has saved millions of lives that could otherwise be lost. Today, our ability to treat common diseases is being threatened by the emergence of resistant bacteria CITATION Ven15 \l 2057 (Ventola, 2015). In recent years, this crisis has continued to grow at alarming rate in all parts of the world. Many studies suggest that one of the many reasons for this unwanted development is human behaviour.
