Palliative Care
Palliative care dates back to 1950s as an articulation of the ideas of Dr. Cicely Saunders on modern hospice care with regard to a close observation of the dying (Fleiger et al., 2019, 98). She advocated that a dying person can be relieved from total pain by an interdisciplinary team in the context of the patient’s family. In 1960s, a US psychiatric, Elisabeth Kubler-Ross confronted resistance to the idea of open and honest communication, alongside treating a dying person with respect (Fleiger et al., 2019, 98). In 1974, a Canadian oncologist gave a demonstration on the meaning of providing holistic care to patients of life-limiting illness together with their families who are undergoing psychological and emotional distress (Fleiger et al., 2019, 99). In 1997, The Institute of Medicine provided some glaring deficiencies towards the end-of-life care and prompted the idea of bringing palliative care into conventional medicine and nursing in the United States (Fleiger et al., 2019, 100). In 2006, The American Board of Medical Specialties noted subspecialty of both palliative and hospice medicine (Fleiger et al, 2019, 100).
Ireland is considered the country with the fastest rising need for providing palliative care to its patients among European countries. In the nation, approximately 80% of the total annual deaths result from conditions that are associated with Palliative care. The number of deaths has been rising and an increment of 42.8% has been recorded over a five year period, resulting from degenerating conditions.
In Europe, more than 28 countries have a national law, a provision policy towards palliative care. It has been well integrated in most countries and more than 90% of nurses in these countries offer basic education on the end of life care. Approximately 40 million people in the world are in need of palliative care each year. An estimation of 78% of this population are from second world and third world countries, especially Africa.
