Reflection on Past Leadership Experience
While change and organizational transformation is inevitable and quite beneficial in most cases, many employees tend to oppose and resist the changes with the fear that their status quo would be affected. I have seen this happen first-hand from my experience in leading a digital product development project at a large bank. The particular bank I was working for was going through a multi-year organizational, technology, operating, and financial model transformation with many challenges. One of the project's primary goals was to incubate a new way of working, with supplemental goals of introducing new technology and delivering the digital customer journey per the requirements. The project came with new roles and responsibilities and an agile process that was modelled after scaled agile for enterprise methodology. However, a core challenge faced was that the roles and responsibilities were not agreed on by most middle management leadership and thus led to conflicts, misunderstandings, and the team's ability to deliver the project on time. Reflecting on this leadership experience, I firmly believe that the project would have been a success had the stakeholder goals and roles and responsibilities been aligned. Alignment of goals on middle management level - the frozen middle during transformation requires both a top-down and a bottom-up approach with a social network focused on people and dialog to facilitate change and be successful.
