Importance of Constituency Work on Modern Democracy
A constituency is a group of individuals belonging to a given region who are given the responsibility to vote and elect an official into an executive or legislative, political position (Heffner and Rentsch, 2001). Members of the constituency are allowed to campaign and seek electoral positions provided hey meet the requirements set for every country. Democracy refers to a system of the government that allows the citizens to vote in their political representatives, and thus involving them in the decision-making process (Dalton et al., 2007). Constituency work refers to the services provided by the Members of Parliament to the citizens under their jurisdiction. The implementation of constituency work is important in fostering modern democracy (Andre et al., 2014). Despite its several benefits, indulging in constituency work also bring some disadvantages to the involved MP’s.
One importance of constituency work on modern democracy is its ability to put into action the requests of the constituents. According to Rehfeld (2005), democracy includes the ability of the citizens to have their requests considered by the relevant authorities. Constituency work involves the implementation of the ideas launched in the manifestos during campaign periods, which is usually the guide that directs the constituents’ voting process (Rehfeld, 2005).
