Overtourism and Impacts on Destination
In the recent past, the concept of overtourism has introduced heated debate among different invested parties and remains one of the most discussed issues in popular media. According to research, the issue of overtourism is multidimensional and complex, which explains the difficulties in resolving it (Koens, Postma, & Papp, 2018, 1). Although tourism is the primary course of the challenges, non-tourism stakeholders, the wider society, and expanding cities play a significant role in escalating overtourism and its impacts on a destination.
Overtourism in Amsterdam
Popular European cities attract large scores of tourists and guests. The attraction to these destinations is an outcome of the good infrastructure facilities, availability of diverse and dynamic population, and a range of multifunctional environments (Koens, Postma, & Papp, 2018, 1). However, popular cities like Amsterdam are victims of their success. According to Preveden (2018, 1), there has been a 57 percent rise in tourists overnight stays in cities since 2008. The overwhelming numbers of tourists in a destination create the problem of overtourism.
