Racial Discrimination and Prejudice in Workplaces
Introduction
Racism is a system of oppression and domination that organizes and divides individuals and groups in a society in ways that structurally disadvantage them and present them as superior to others based on cultural differences in values, beliefs and behaviors (Feagin 2010)). Racial discrimination in workplaces plays a central and persistent role in the economic and social inequalities that are persistent in nations. Racial discrimination manifests in subtle ways such as benefits and pays, assignments that workers are given, how performance is judged and rewarded and promotions. Workplace racial segregation is persistent in developed countries and widespread in developing countries. It is a feature of work-life that contributes to how society is organized in ways that disadvantage minority and subordinate groups (Di Stasio & Larsen 2020). Racial discrimination in workplaces prevents minority groups and individuals from applying for certain professions and reflects deep-rooted power and social inequalities. It is an issue that results from an intersection of multiple identities like race, gender and ethnicity, and this impacts the employee and the work environment. Despite the progress made in society in recent years, racial discrimination in workplaces is a multidimensional construct that is a significant problem in workplaces and continues to evolve.
