Racism Continues to be A Problem in America
Race is a socially constructed classification of people with specific physical or genetic characteristics (Davis, 2016). Since the early days of the United States, race has been a controversial issue. The country was founded on the principles of freedom and equality, but it took many years for these ideals to be extended to all citizens, regardless of race. Instead, racism has prevailed for centuries since minority groups have been discriminated against and prejudiced because of their race (Davis, 2016). Race is still a sensitive issue, and racism continues to be a problem in America. African Americans and other minorities have been the target of racism since the days of slavery. Even after the Civil War and stopping slavery, African Americans were subjected to Jim Crow laws and other forms of discrimination. It wasn't until the Civil Rights Movement of the mid-20th century that minority groups finally started to gain equal rights in America (Yearby, Clark and Figueroa, 2022).
