African Art gallery
The Denver Art Museum has numerous NON-WESTERN galleries and my choice for one work of art is African Art. The collection of African Art tells stories of Africa in many perspectives. Africa is a continent that contains thousands of art-producing societies. I chose the Daniel Yohannes Family African Gallery, Level 4, Hamilton Building, which is a, collection of more than 1,000 objects and tells the stories of Africa from many perspectives. This specific art piece shows Africans riding on horses, grinding their food with a mortar and pestle and holding wooden logs. The piece can be made out of the woodwork, rough in texture and depicts how ancient African communities carried out their chores, carried out rituals and rode on horses. The piece is about Daniel Yohannes and his family who is an Ethiopian-American businessman, a philanthropist and currently the Chief Executive Officer of Millennium Challenge Corporation. Daniel Yohannes served in the Denver Art Museum board of Trustees and aided in the provision of the first African art gallery space, in the museum, and also expanded the museum section of the African art collection (Caruso & Andrea 14).
The piece is made in honor of Daniel Yohannes and his family, and it was made out of the woodwork by Daniel Libeskind. The piece is used to tell stories of Africans from various perspectives. The piece was displayed slanting by placing it against the wall on a table. The piece has been discussed as a fine work of art with individual stories of artists such as Olowe Ise and Fernando Alvim who are visual chroniclers of their times. From the piece, I notice the carved out people from the woodwork riding on horses, undertaking daily chores in preparation of meals and performing rituals. The piece relates to other works of art around it due to the ancient times in African culture, which it depicts, the piece is typical of the time and place it is produced because of its visual features and effects. It is also unique to its audience since there is no similar piece like it in the African art gallery of the Denver Art Museum. It influen...
