Exploratory Issue on Gun Control in the US
Causes for the Gun Control Issue
The issue of gun control in the United States was addressed due to the rising incidents of crime. Specifically, following a recent incident of mass killings in the United States, many people have condemned individuals involved in the incident (Monuteaux, Lee, Hemenway, Mannix, & Fleegler, p. 207). The increase in the number of deaths and accidents in the United States led to the development of numerous debates over the issue of gun control to curb the menace. La Valle (p. 2) indicated that the recent mass killings that happened in the United States made the behavioral scientists, policy researchers, policy makers and elected officials to thoroughly review the gun policies in the United States. The policies to be addressed included the personal protection measures and the gun laws.
Past and Present Interests on Gun Control
Currently, the ease of owning a gun in the United States has led to widespread availability of firearms. The Gun advocates presently indicate that traditional gun policies have constantly failed to prevent accidents and killings of all sorts (La Valle, p. 2). This is proven by the various mass murders committed with firearms in workplaces, schools, restaurants, houses of worship, and other public places that causes people to be anxious and vulnerable (Krouse & Daniel, p. 1). The traditional gun policies are only associated with preventing law-abiding citizens from protecting themselves. Therefore, gun control supporters hold that the present gun control measures should be increased so as to offer protection to citizens from the gun owners (La Valle, p. 2). In addition, the laws in the constitution of the United States which were amended some years back are being misread by modern societies (Krouse, p.6). The law on the second amendment indicates that citizens have the right to keep and bear arms. The freedom of owning guns is not restricted making it possible for any willing individual to acquire one. The gun control legislations have been having questions on what is the importance of modern citizens owning firearms which is not designed for hunting or other recognized sporting purposes. La Valle (p.2) indicates that the general public supports the idea of modifying the existing gun measures to help in preventing gun misuse leading to mass killings in the future. Thus, the firearm restrictions advocates have proposed the policy changes on various types of firearms they believe poses risk to the public and used for criminal purposes (Krouse, p. 7). However, the gun rights community support legislations that are intended to promote hunting, fishing, and recreational shooting on public lands (Krouse p. 7).
Individuals Interested In the Gun Control Issue
The public, gun control advocates, elected officials and policy makers among others have embraced the issue of reviewing policy laws on gun control. The increases in crimes and mass killings have compelled everyone in the society to address the issue of gun control. Also, the gun advocates are interested in the issue of gun control due to the misuse of legally owned guns to commit crimes such as mass killings (Goldberg, p.71). People often acquire firearms legally and later use the firearms to terrorize innocent citizens. The increase in the misuse of the guns prompts for urgent review of gun ownership policies to protect the lives of citizens both in the private and public places. Therefore, the gun advocates propose that the laws in the constitution that gives people freedom to own guns have been violated (Goldberg, p. 71). The increase in guns among the citizens increases risks to the safety of the environment. Goldberg (p. 70) indicates that most gun advocates are at shock following the increased number of deaths to the use of guns as compared deaths observed in suicides or accidents. The alarming rate of increase in the gun misuse cases is undesirable. Consequently, the public has supported the issues of gun control due to the increased violence at school and other public places (Carter). However, the individuals with pro-gun ideology argue that many Americans would achieve self-reliance. Also, the move towards classlessness in America is advocated for. The classlessness can be achieved by everybody being allowed to own a gun so that a smaller, less powerful person can defend themselves at a distance from the more powerful person.
Ongoing Views about Gun Control Issue
There are numerous views concerning the issues relating to gun control. The gun control opponents and proponents have varied views regarding to firearms regulations. The opponents are against the current regulations while the proponents are supporting ownership of firearms by any citizen. The firearm supporters claim that increasing the fire-arms regulations would aid in reducing fire-arms related crime (Monuteaux et al., p. 207). Also, the supporters argue that having a gun makes one feel safer. However, other people indicate that the widespread availability of firearms would discourage crime and enhance personal defense. This creates a controversy over the relationship between firearm ownership and the incidence of criminal activities. The gun control opponents defer with the gun control regulations indicating that the gun laws do not accomplish their purposes (Krouse, p. 7). The gun control opponents argue that it is hard to keep weapons from being acquired by high risk individuals even under federal laws and enforcement. Also, they continue to argue that strict firearms regulatory system would only create a problem to the law abiding citizens because of heightened bans and increased frustrations that could threaten citizen’s civil rights or safety. They insist that crimes from other countries have to do nothing with gun control (Krouse, p. 7). The gun control opponents reject the assumption that guns are only for recreational purposes. They insist that the guns can also be used for self defense and to avert any government tyranny in future. They also claim that the law enforcement and criminal justice systems have failed to demonstrate the ability to provide adequate measures of public safety in all settings (Krouse, p. 7). The contention between the two sides worsens daily. Vizzard (pp. 887-888) indicates that the trend for the public supporting gun laws regulation has decreased. This is due to the fact that the public’s support for and trust in the government has also declined.
