The American Express Company, one of the most prominent and prestigious corporate bodies today, came into being as a result of the merger of three companies engaged in the express business in 1850. These companies, which dealt in the quick transportation of goods of various kinds such as correspondence, parcels, currency, jewelry and other valuables aimed at achieving the synergy attributable to the joining forces to create greater competitive advantage over rivals in the same industry.
The organization, initially unincorporated grew rapidly due to the reliability of its services in comparison with other companies in the industry, resulting in its incorporation an expansion across the United States and later on across the world. in spite of facing competition from various rivals, such as the Merchants Union Express Company, American Express was able to gain and retain a sufficient market share that resulted in the company operating more than 1000 officers across the United States and Europe. the company began to diversify its operations, engaging in the financial services sector and travel related services, a strategy that played a critical role in the expansion of American Express and its stability in the industry in which the company operates.
