Training and development in organizations define the formal efforts made by organizations to improve the performance of its employees. These organizations undertake these trainings through several through several methods and programs. In today’s workplace, efforts to improve employees’ skills are made through a wide range of applications. They range from instructions in highly specific job expertise to professional development which is long-term.
Recently, training of employees has become a formal business function, a recognized profession with diverse methodologies and theories. It has also emerged as integral element of strategy. Many companies and businesses are using “continual learning” as a means of improving skills of their employees. In fact, the quality of employees as well as the continuous improvement of their skills plays a vital role in improving profitability of businesses. Continual learning of all types in organizations is vital if the organizations do not want to make a stride against skills deficiency and not to lose ground (Noe, 2006).
Another form of training widely used by organizations is the computer-based training. This form of training mainly uses computers as well as computer-based instructional material as a way giving instructions. Computer-based training programs are mostly designed to structure and give instructional materials. They are also designed to facilitate the learning process for employees. The main advantage of computer-based training is that it allows employees to comfortably learn at their own pace, especially during convenient times. The main uses of computer-based training are instructions in computer software, hardware and operational equipment. It also provides the learner with a simulated experience of operating certain type of machinery or equipment. In this case, it eliminates the risk of damage to expensive equipment by a learner or even a novice user. On the same note, the operational use of the equipment is maximized since the equipment is used as a training tool (Seldon, 2009).
Use of computer-based training enables small organizations to cut on training costs while making the training process more effective. The training costs are reduced through minimal travels, reduced training time and smaller number of instructors. Training is made more effective through individualization and standardization. Recently, CD-ROM and videodisc have successfully been integrated into PC-platforms hence increasing possibility and flexibility of computer-based training (Noe, 2006).
The other form of employee training used by organizations is undertaking team-building exercises. Team-building refers to active creation and maintenance of working groups that are more effective with similar goals and objectives....
