Starting a restaurant in Jamaica
Introduction
Starting a restaurant in Jamaica is absolutely rewarding experience (UN 122). Jamaica is a relatively small island with global personality in the business world. The country has a strong global influence that radiates well beyond its small size. The country is an emerging market with huge possibilities for business opportunities and wide inward investments. Tourism dominates the economy of this country supporting more than 3 million visitors from across the world. Notably, this island is open for various major investments that include Agriculture and tourism. Because of tourism, it is evident that starting a restaurant company in Jamaica is highly profitable and lucrative (UN 122).
Jamaican food is made up of fusion cuisine that combines dishes and ingredients of Africa, American, Asian and Spanish communities who have lived in this country for many centuries (Permenter & Bigley 85). The dishes found in this island reflect the cheap accessibility of the Jamaicans to fresh seafood and this may be a little bit difficult to duplicate in any restaurant located in this country. However much the dining Jamaican patrons have a higher desire for authenticity, note it is surprising to note that many inauthentic restaurants have been established where plantains, rice, beans, and jerk chicken very essential (Permenter & Bigley 85). For my case, I will not neglect the less common dishes such as curries and stews that are able to fulfill the desires of my customers for a real Jamaican eating experience. My intended market for this matter will be the tourists from across the world and the islanders. Additionally, local people can also be the consumer of my products. This is because there has been an increasing consumption rates since larger proportions of consumers like taking the already prepared food home. This has seen the number of food-service sky rocketing from about 155000 to 960000 for over the last 40 years (Permenter & Bigley 85).
Government & Political Structure and political environment
The legal political aspect and structure is very important in global business operations and marketing. Since this will be an international business, the international law applies in this case. As an international business, am likely to be subjected to political decrees made by governments in both the host and my home country. The political systems that include ideology, nationalism, and international relations are likely to affect the operations of my businesses (UN 123).
The Jamaican government stability is good especially when it comes to provision of financial assistance to newly emerging businesses or companies and foreign investors like me (UN 123). As much as she is a developing country, she has shown a remarkable rise in her economy; a move that has attracted many investors in different fields that majorly includes tourism. Through assessment and evaluation of this particular opportunity, it is notable that the government takes active part in different business including all the operational stages to ensure that consumers protect consumers from exploitations. Some restaurants charge high food prices which on a scrutiny, cripples them financially (UN 125). The Jamaican government is obliged to prevent this.
In Jamaica, it is notable that many of the business companies and organizations poses time staying at the top most position of regulatory and legal issues (UN 129). However, for the restaurants and food services company, the acquisition of the permit and the compliance with the government’s requirement heavily weights on the everyday activities of the business. Jamaican government plays significant part in the regulations of the businesses such as restaurants. This indicates that the operations of restaurants are highly affected by the government through its involvement in these particular businesses.
Since starting restaurant in Jamaica is my interest in this case, I will need to obtain quite a number of licenses and permits from the state and the local government. Requirements of licensing and permit in Jamaica for small business or big companies vary from one jurisdiction to another. It is therefore critical to contact the state and the local government to facilitate and determine some specific obligations of my new restaurant business. Some of the requirements of the state and local government that I will need to acquire before starting the business operation include; International business operation license, the fictitious business name permit, land use permits, sales tax license, and fire department permits. The Special state-issued business license is meant for businesses and companies that wish to involve itself in the sale of products such as liquors. To accommodate the customers from all sorts of diversity, I will not neglect this license (Permenter & Bigley 85).
Crime and corruption also has affected the operation of very many restaurants within the city and along the beaches (UN 127). Some companies may resort to engage in unlawful business practices that poses threat to the government. These activities may range from tax fraud and acting Ultra-vires (working outside the objective of the company). Jamaican government ensures that this does not happen. The situation will therefore be conducive for my restaurant.
International shipping
International shipping of the products is another valuable factor that I will need to put into consideration. In Jamaica, it is notable that non-tariff barriers to trade exist. They are meant to regulate amount, type, and quality of goods that enter and leave a particular country. There use in Jamaica has risen steadily after the significant reduction in tariff use led by WTO (Permenter & Bigley 85). However, some quotas, tariffs, and barriers are not directly related to the foreign markets regulation but plays significant impacts on the foreign business activities. This is likely to impact positively in my restaurant company. Infrastructure is another important factors that to consider. Good infrastructure facilitates the movement of goods and people. Therefore, I will consider establishing my company in a suitable area easily accessible to customers.
Cultural factors and potential obstacles
Labor quality its availability and cultural factors determines the success of any company (UN 134). For the case of labor, it will be prudent to develop a desire to employ skilled labor force in this company. Cooks, accountants and cashiers, restaurant attendants and other employees should possess relevant skills and knowledge to produce a quality output that is able to meet the expectations of the customers. Establishment of the company in a location having ready supply of local labor force will be of great importance. On the other hand, some culture dictates the type of foods eaten...
