Important Business Aspect Impacting Negatively on Society
Businesses are catalysts to economic growth. They provide goods and services pivotal in monetary exchange. As individuals buy goods and services, they directly contribute to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita, hence adding value to the country. In a bid to maximize their input to the GDP, businesses find themselves indulging in aspects that negatively affect society. The aspects can be, but not limited to, habitat destruction, pollution, child labor, and corruption. As much as all these aspects corrode society, child labor tops the negative impact on society. Child labor is any form of exploitation of a person below the legal age of majority and it impacts negatively on society as it accelerates cognitive dissonance, exposes children to abuse, and negatively affects the economy.
Cognitive dissonance is described as an experience of psychological stress experienced when an individual holds two or more contradictory values, ideas, or beliefs. The condition is prevalent in persons predisposed to child labor. According to United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), more than 2,000 children are child laborers with the highest number of child laborers found in developing countries such as Eritrea and Pakistan (George et al. 87).
